Medicare AEP: What To Know and Deadlines

Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period, often called AEP, is an important opportunity to review whether your health coverage will still work well for the year ahead. Medicare plans can change annually, including their costs, prescription drug coverage, provider networks, and added benefits. Taking time to look over your options can help you make a well-informed decision before the new plan year begins.
The Medicare Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7. Changes made during this time generally begin on January 1. You are not required to change plans, but an annual Medicare review can help you avoid discovering unexpected costs or coverage changes after the new year is underway.
What You Can Change During Medicare AEP
AEP gives eligible Medicare beneficiaries a designated time to update coverage based on their current health needs, prescriptions, preferred doctors, and budget. The coverage that suited you last year may not be the best choice for the coming year, particularly if your health situation or a plan’s details have changed.
During this enrollment window, people with Original Medicare may decide to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, also known as Medicare Part C. Medicare Advantage plans combine hospital and medical benefits and often include Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage within one plan.
Others who already have a Medicare Advantage plan may decide that returning to Original Medicare better supports their priorities. Broader access to providers or the desire to consider Medicare Supplement insurance, often called Medigap, can be factors in that decision.
Medicare AEP can also be used to:
- Move from one Medicare Advantage plan to another.
- Leave a Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare.
- Enroll in a standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan.
- Change or discontinue an existing Part D prescription drug plan.
These choices are not meant to be made on autopilot. AEP gives you the chance to reassess your coverage with updated information and select an option that aligns with your needs for the year ahead.
Why an Annual Medicare Coverage Review Matters
Keeping a plan does not necessarily mean its benefits, costs, and rules will remain the same. Medicare Advantage and Part D plans are offered by private insurers, and plan details may be revised from one year to the next.
Your monthly premium may change, but it is not the only item worth reviewing. Deductibles, copayments, coinsurance amounts, annual out-of-pocket limits, provider networks, covered prescriptions, and extra benefits may also be different for the upcoming plan year.
That means a plan that has been a good fit may offer less convenience or value after January 1. Reviewing your Annual Notice of Change and comparing available coverage options can help you understand what is changing before your enrollment opportunity closes.
At Granen Insurance, we encourage Medicare clients to approach AEP as a regular coverage checkup. Even when you remain with your current plan, reviewing it can provide reassurance that it continues to support your healthcare needs and financial priorities.
Review Prescription Drug Coverage Carefully
Prescription drug coverage is one of the most important parts of a Medicare review. A Medicare Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage uses a formulary, which is the list of medications covered by that plan.
Formularies can be updated each year. A medication you currently take could move to another cost tier, require prior authorization, or be handled differently under the plan’s rules. Those changes may affect what you pay out of pocket for prescriptions.
It is helpful to make a current list of your medications and review each one during AEP. Comparing how plans cover your prescriptions can help you identify whether your current coverage still makes sense or whether another plan may better fit your needs.
Pharmacy access matters as well. A plan may offer preferred pharmacies that can affect prescription costs, so it is wise to verify that your preferred pharmacy remains available under the plan you are considering.
Confirm Your Doctors and Healthcare Providers
Provider networks deserve attention during every Annual Enrollment Period. Physicians, specialists, hospitals, and other healthcare providers may enter or leave a Medicare Advantage plan’s network between plan years.
If maintaining access to particular doctors or facilities is important to you, confirm their participation before making a coverage choice. Waiting until after coverage begins can create unnecessary frustration and may require you to change providers or face higher costs.
Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans, and Medicare Supplement coverage can provide different approaches to provider access. Understanding how each option works is an important part of choosing Medicare coverage that fits your preferences.
Consider More Than the Monthly Premium
It is understandable to focus first on the monthly premium when comparing Medicare plans. However, the premium is only one component of your total healthcare spending for the year.
A plan with a lower premium may still have higher deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, or other out-of-pocket costs. A complete comparison should account for expected doctor visits, hospital care, prescription drug expenses, and the plan’s annual out-of-pocket maximum.
Looking at the full cost structure can provide a clearer picture than comparing premiums alone. The goal is not simply to find the lowest monthly payment, but to identify coverage that makes sense for your expected healthcare use and budget.
Evaluate Extra Medicare Benefits
Many Medicare Advantage plans offer additional benefits beyond what Original Medicare generally covers. Depending on the plan, those benefits may include routine dental care, vision services, hearing support, fitness programs, transportation assistance, or allowances for qualifying over-the-counter health products.
These benefits can be valuable, but they are not identical from plan to plan and may change each year. During AEP, take a closer look at how a plan provides each benefit, including any restrictions, available allowances, provider requirements, or cost-sharing.
Considering these features alongside medical and prescription coverage can help you compare the overall value of Medicare Advantage plans. A benefit that is useful to one person may not be a priority for another, so your review should remain focused on your individual needs.

Medicare choices can feel complicated because each plan may combine costs, provider access, prescription drug coverage, and supplemental benefits differently. Having clear information can make the comparison process more manageable.
